I am a humanist funeral celebrant and take ceremonies in and around Bournemouth in Dorset with occasional excursions into neighbouring counties.
I live with my husband in Bournemouth itself and we have two grown-up daughters in London. As well as being a pillar of the local U3A, where I enjoy languages and music, I mentor adult learning courses and support the local and very active Dorset Humanists.
Now that I’m in my sixties and after a career dedicated to education, teacher training and management, I have chosen to embrace something I consider to be equally vital, though in a completely different way.
It wasn’t until 2006 that I had time to stop and take a breath and realise that in fact I’d always been a humanist. This revelation and the taking part in the funeral ceremonies of two of my own loved ones convinced me to become a celebrant. I completed my training the following year and derive enormous fulfilment from working with families, individuals and friends to create a ceremony which is exactly what they want and absolutely fitting for the person who has died.
I am part of a local group of 6 celebrant colleagues, who support each other, and we are able to provide a reliable and professional service. Between us we ensure that there is always a humanist celebrant available to conduct ceremonies for families in South Central England. See the right hand column for links to some of their websites.
‘You were right….it truly was a beautiful ceremony. Thank you so much for all the thought and attention to detail you put in for us… it was perfect and we can now always look back with no regrets. Thanks again Maggie, you did a fine job.’
