Marriage – the legal bit

Note ~ marriage legalities:

Unfortunately, humanist weddings aren’t currently legally recognised in England and Wales, though there is a review into marriage law by the Law Commission. Humanist weddings are legal in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey & Guernsey.

Therefore, as a couple you will need to visit the registry office for a registrar to perform the legal bit with two witnesses, before or after the humanist wedding ceremony. A marriage in a statutory ceremony room at a registry office can take place Monday to Friday and costs £57.00 with no booking fee (as at July 2022). Your humanist wedding ceremony will however, be unique and personal to you and includes your personalised vows and ring exchanges.

Staffordshire County Council, working in partnership with celebrants are also pleased to announce that as from 1st January 2018, couples marrying in the county will be able to have a ‘Combined Wedding Ceremony’ under a new pilot scheme. The scheme will, for the first time, allow marrying couples the opportunity to have their legal formalities conducted by Staffordshire County Council Registrars at an approved venue, and have a celebrant ceremony as well.
