About Ed Petrie

Hello, I’m Ed, a wedding celebrant working throughout London – and beyond!

I’ve been involved in humanist wedding ceremonies for over ten years, making families’ wedding dreams come true up and down the country as part of the BBC TV show ‘Marrying Mum and Dad’. Whoever you are as a couple, whatever your story, we’ll work together to make an utterly unique wedding. If you’re bursting with ideas, I want to hear them. If you’re a bit daunted by it all, don’t worry! Let me help you craft your perfect ceremony, as adventurous or as laid back as you like.

It’s all about the love.

What is Humanism?

My favourite way of summing up Humanism is:

“There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

Although if you want to get really technical, the Minimum Statement on Humanism from Humanists International states:

“Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance that affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. Humanism stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethics based on human and other natural values in a spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. Humanism is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.”

I think the first one’s more catchy. Either way, Humanists are great believers in everyone being made to feel included. Great effort is taken in a humanist ceremony to make sure that no one, whatever their beliefs, feels left out.

As the great humanist philosopher Bertrand Russell said “Love is wise, hatred is foolish.” Let’s spread the love!
