Premorials and living funerals

“If only s/he was here – s/he’d love this…”

It’s a sentiment often expressed at funerals and memorials; that in some way the most important person is missing out on all the love and affection flowing their way. And it’s why an increasing number of people (especially those with life-limiting conditions or in advanced age) are opting to hold and be at a ‘premorial’ or living funeral before they die. It’s a unique way to leave nothing unsaid and separate positive mourning and appreciation from the actual point of death and practical arrangements for burial or cremation.

It’s not possible or right for everyone of course – but if the personalities and circumstances permit, it can be something very special and memorable indeed. Living funerals or seizensō (生前葬) are an established part of Japanese culture, and (in response to longer life expectancy and dementia) the practice has been gaining in popularity in North America and parts of Europe over the past decade.

How it works

This wonderful clip shows the artist Grayson Perry leading a living funeral for someone approaching the end of life: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=333092854092331

I can’t rival Mr Perry’s talents, but I can talk to you and your family about whether a premorial or living funeral might suit you, and help to put all the arrangements in place. And if you like, I can lead the event as celebrant.

Give the idea some thought – you may be very pleasantly surprised!

Ian was compassionate, professional and maintained a sense of humour. He had a wealth of knowledge and experience and made some good suggestions for the service, which we adopted. He was prompt, courteous and very personable. Many attendees said how impressed they were with the event.
