One Humanist’s Advice

When I was trying to work out my own equivalent to Islamic pillars or Judaeo-Christian commandments, I came up with the following:

One Humanist’s advice for a good life and a successful community

Treat others in the way that you would like to be treated: goodness and generosity feed on each other, and grow.

Engage fully with other members of the human family, and accept willingly any differences of race, age, gender, status, background, belief or way of life. The things which you have in common are more numerous and more profound than any differences.

Respect your parents: they gave you life and gave you the first example of unconditional positive regard.

Do the decent thing: honour and justice make the human animal more noble than other living beings.

You have only one life, this one, so strive to be happy; the best way to make yourself happy is to make others happy first.

Take responsibility for your every action; think through the consequences of everything you do, and the impact you may have on your fellow travellers.

Look after the world you inhabit; it is precious and fragile, and will still be so for the generations that follow you.
