Why I became a celebrant

I decided to become a funeral celebrant after a close friend died and the family chose a humanist funeral. I was so moved by the recognisable portrait, the celebration that was also a dignified ceremony, drawing in all the mourners, that it seemed like a meaningful thing for me to do with my skills.

Other work I do

I’m a professional writer.  I began my working life as an actor, then became a playwright and theatre maker.  I feel this gives me a deep sense of the importance of ritual and supports me in a creative approach to funerals as a celebration of life.

I’ve also facilitated all kinds of groups, of all ages and abilities, across all walks of life, to write or tell their own stories. I like to work with other people and am a sensitive listener.

I speak fluent German and am happy to use my language skills at any time.

I have two grown children who share my interest in printmaking and the environment. Walking the river, gardening and friends around the world are all important to me.
