Who is Raquel?

I am a purpose seeker, a lifelong learner, and a dreamer. For twenty years, I worked as a primary teacher and adored the magic of designing unique learning experiences for and with children and their families. Each lesson was ritualised because I believe that meaningful routines contribute to a healthier everyday life. During those two decades, I also coached teachers and delivered teacher training sessions. Both of these activities required careful listening and planning according to the specificities of each teacher and each group of teachers. All of these skills, marry beautifully into my work as a Humanist celebrant.

I believe that today is a gift that we must unwrap as if it is the only one we get because it cannot be taken for granted. I also believe that it is important to cherish and celebrate each other while we can, and I relish translating people’s feelings, dreams, and visions into words and actions, through custom-made celebrations. I chose to train with the charity Humanists UK, because were instrumental in successfully campaigning for legal same-sex marriage, and they have been conducting ceremonies for same-sex couples for at least two decades, long before they had legal recognition. As an ally, I offer a discount for people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Oh, the magic of bringing together friends and family to witness a wedding ceremony! Each celebration is unique, because it reflects who you are in the world in that moment. 

I worked as a primary teacher, a teacher trainer and a coach, and it was an honour to do such meaningful work. I have always empathised strongly with people, and I love helping others find and develop their strengths. I am truly multipassionate and fascinated about learning, so I do a little bit of everything. I adore swimming in the sea, organising the unofficial Park Run in Lisbon, and hosting the podcast Anxiety My Friend – Ansiedade Minha Amiga .

English and Portuguese are my native languages and I can weave in some Spanish and French too, if that suits you. Nowadays, so many couples come from different countries and it can be exquisite to combine meaningful pieces from different languages, cultures, and stories, while celebrating diversity.
