What to expect
As your funeral celebrant I will advise, support and guide you through this difficult time. I will assist you in creating a funeral befitting your loved one and conduct your chosen service with warmth and dignity.
A funeral ceremony usually includes a tribute, music, readings, poetry, or symbolic gestures. Sometimes the celebrant does all of the speaking but often some family and friends of the deceased take part. You can plant a tree, light candles, sing songs, or raise a glass in honour of your loved one. Most ceremonies include a period of reflection for everyone to say their final farewell in their own way.
A typical structure is
- Introductory music
- Words of welcome
- Thoughts on life and death – from a non- religious perspective
- The tribute – an outline of the life and the personality of the deceased.
- Readings of poetry or prose may be included and contributions from family or friends are welcome
- Private reflection – a few moments for private thoughts and memories, either in silence or accompanied by music
- The committal – when the curtains are closed or the coffin lowered
- Closing words
- Final music.
Most humanist funeral ceremonies are conducted at a crematorium, cemetery, or green burial site but they can be held wherever you choose.
I will typically:
- Meet with you (normally 1-2 hours duration) to learn about the deceased, discuss choices of music and poetry
- Offer advice on the practicalities, such as the duration of the service and options for committal
- Draft a unique ceremony tailored to your loved one
- I’ll liaise with everyone involved in the ceremony, including the Funeral Director and those contributing on the day
- Be available by phone/email to answer any questions which may arise
- On the day, I’ll lead the ceremony we’ve agreed in a calm, dignified and professional manner
- Present you with a final copy of the funeral script.
