Types of funeral

There are a number of different ways to organise a funeral. I can help you to choose, but a good local funeral director is usually an incredibly useful resource too.

Direct or pure cremation. This is where the body is taken away for a simple, unattended cremation, giving you the choice of when and where to hold the actual ceremony. This could be on the same day or some time later. There is usually an option to spend time with the body (generally in a closed coffin) at the funeral home beforehand.

Crematorium ceremony. The most common type of funeral, where the body is taken to a local crematorium and family and friends gather to celebrate the person’s life and say farewell.

Natural burial. This is held at a natural or woodland burial ground, which usually has a small building in which to conduct the ceremony. It is regarded as the most environmentally-friendly type of funeral.

Interment of ashes. This is where the body may have been cremated at an earlier date but the cremation remains are to be interred in a permanent location. This could be anything from a dedicated family plot to woodlands or private gardens.

There are plenty of other options (some more conventional than others!) and you are free to choose whatever you wish
