What happens next?

Putting together a humanist funeral is very much a collaborative process. Usually, the first step is for us to meet to talk about the person who has died. This could be either online or in person. That will be your opportunity to talk about the person’s life, share stories, highlight their values, what they loved, even their pet hates! I will ask questions and take notes, but the most important thing I will do is listen. This is your chance to talk over what sort of ceremony you would like and the kind of tone you would like to set. We can also explore ideas about music and readings.

Drawing on all the stories and reminiscences you have provided, I will put together a ceremony which will aim to be an authentic reflection of the personality of your loved one. I will share a draft with you so that you can check it and make amendments. Various friends and family may want to be involved in the ceremony itself, and I can provide support in whatever form needed.

I will stay in touch with you throughout the process and also liaise directly with the funeral director to ensure everything runs smoothly.

How much will it cost?  To provide families with choice, humanist celebrants tend to charge fees similar to the parochial fees set by the Church of England. My charges start at £300 for a 30-minute funeral ceremony. For longer services and memorials, my charges start at £325. I do not charge a fee for funeral ceremonies of people under the age of 18.

You may already have been left very clear instructions by the person who has died, or you may have no idea where to even start.  Whatever the situation, I am confident that together we can craft a memorable and fitting farewell to honour your loved one.
