Naming or welcoming ceremonies

A humanist non-religious ceremony for a baby or young child is a wonderful welcome to the world, and often makes those present reflect on the values they hold in their own lives.   Those taking part speak  honestly and sincerely, using  words they have chosen.

Parents and the people they choose to share in bringing up the child express their joy in the child, and their hopes and intentions, outlining the values they hope the family will share.  Some families light candles as symbols of warmth and love, some sign a certificate to commemorate the day, all share in wishing the child well.

Humanist naming ceremonies include all or most of the following, interspersed with readings:

  • Words of introduction and welcome
  • Expression of hopes for the child’s life
  • Promises and hopes of the parents
  • Promises and hopes of the guardians (or whatever name for them is  chosen)
  • A few words in unison spoken by the whole gathering
  • Lighting candles or other symbol
  • Signing a certificate
  • Closing words,
  • Invitation to celebrate, toast to the family

I ask those arranging the ceremony to visit me to talk about the ceremony they wish to have.  If they wish to go ahead, I ask for a deposit of half the fee.    I then email them sample scripts and ideas for the ceremony.   I keep in touch with them by phone or email, and the script takes shape with input from us all, and is usually finalised in the week or so before the ceremony.  I give the family several copies of the script to keep  in presentation folders.

My total fee is in the region of £150 depending what is involved.

Do feel free to contact me if you wish to talk about humanist ceremonies.
