My Background

‘Tamiko was everything you could wish for in a celebrant — compassionate, careful, and creative. She guided us through the process with such care, sensibility, and kindness. We couldn’t recommend her more highly.’  I.W and L.L

Village life in Hampshire in the 1970s had its challenges. My Mother’s Japanese accent was often met with blank looks and I quickly developed a quasi ‘Oxford English’ accent so that I could explain what she was asking for ‘more clearly’. This resulted in various unintended consequences, I was often given the role of narrator in school plays!  Inevitably I moved to London as soon as I could, studying Fine Art to Master’s level while supporting myself through working as a waitress and running a market stall.

Following my studies I had two relatively compatible careers, as both a practicing artist and as an academic, teaching and running higher education courses in the arts. My most recent academic appointment was working as Principal for a small specialist Art College run as a charity, and I remain connected in a voluntary capacity as Professor Emerita.

My partner and I both love living in London and enjoy being part of a lively and eclectic neighbourhood, with a shared artists’ studio, a much-adored rescue cat, a nearby park for our tai chi practice, and, of course, all of the cultural riches and other surprises the city has to offer. In the last couple of years we have become intimate with the many wonderful playgrounds on our doorstep during regular play dates with our grandchildren.

Working as a celebrant draws upon my personal experiences and challenges, my professional skills, and my ethics as a humanist, together with the excellent training, mentoring and continuous professional development provided by Humanists UK. I find it a hugely rewarding role and enjoy being part of a community of celebrants who are equally determined to provide meaningful, inclusive, and memorable ceremonies.

“You gave M the loveliest farewell yesterday. I have to thank you for your calm and clear delivery. It helped us all to focus on M and what she meant and continues to mean to us… What you do and the way you do it is truly special.” G.C

“Those of us who were not sure about whether we felt able to participate were treated with such respect and patience and you offered us the encouragement and support we needed before the ceremony and on the day…” J.L
