Planning Your Own Funeral
Pre-planning your funeral can bring reassurance and peace of mind to you and your loved ones. It allows you to discuss funeral wishes with a celebrant, and know that these have been securely recorded. Knowing that a level of preparation has taken place can bring comfort and relief as the pressure is taken off those who may otherwise be second guessing your funeral wishes. For more information on how Humanist UK conduct this service, please follow this link: Humanist UK Pre-Planned.
Is Pre-planning for me?
I adapt my approach depending on the individual but broadly, people usually fit into two scenarios:
- supporting people who are approaching the end of their life (for the purpose of this, I define ‘approaching end of life’ to mean within 6-12 months.)
- working with people who want to plan their funeral in advance, but are otherwise healthy.
The different options available…
Enquiry // Free of charge
Includes:
- Initial discussion about Humanist UK, what celebrants do and what’s on offer
Funeral Planning Meeting or Consultation // £50 (for up to two hours)
Includes:
- A funeral planning meeting with the celebrant facilitating, advising and collating preferred funeral plans. This will be compiled and shared with the client for safe-keeping. These notes will form the beginning of a client file stored on Humanist UK repository (subject to individual agreeing to GDPR statement)
This meeting can be a stand alone or it may be a precursor to the next level of the service (below).
Writing a Draft Ceremony // £100 (Half of a full funeral ceremony fee)
Includes the above and
- The writing of a draft ceremony script which is shared with the client (note; the amount written will vary according to individual circumstances)
In the case of a person planning their ceremony while in good health:
- The celebrant creates a client file in the repository hosted by Humanists UK, and uploads the client’s notes and draft script for safe-keeping.
In the case of those who are at the end of life:
- The celebrant creates a client file in the repository hosted by Humanists UK, and uploads the client’s notes and draft script for safe-keeping.
- The celebrant will hopefully be able to deliver the ceremony themselves or find a colleague to do so. The remaining of the full fee will then be charged on delivery of the ceremony (remaining fee of £100, totaling £200). This often is covered within the costs of a funeral and would come under “officiant’s fee”. The individual or family will need to ask the Funeral Director to contact the celebrant to ensure continuity of support.
