Bereavement Resources for Schools

These pages are links to resources for teachers who wish to teach about bereavement, as part of the curriculum, or who are looking for ways of supporting children in their school who have experienced bereavement. Some of the sites are commercial and the resources are for sale, others are provided by charitable websites.

See also the section on ‘Child Death and Help for Young People’ and ‘Books for Children’ on the Bereavement Grief and Mourning tab on this site.

Interestingly, in the last few years, the past President of the NAFD (National Association of Funeral Directors), John Adams has been campaigning for schools to be better equipped to help bereaved children, or even introduce bereavement and loss as part of the curriculum. I can only applaud his efforts and wish his campaign well.

Winston’s Wish

This is a site dedicated to helping schools to develop strategies and policies to support bereaved children. It is backed by a charitable foundation and  provides example policies and guidance, strategies, and training. It is very comprehensive and should be the starting point for any school wishing to ensure that its children will be supported, whenever the need may arise. It is like having a First Aid pack, always available in school for supporting a bereaved child. The resources are provided free of charge.

Child Bereavement UK

There are huge amounts of free resources for everything concerned with child bereavement. It is available for schools, parents and anyone else dealing with children in those circumstances. Training, counselling, videos, etc. available in age appropriate categories

Hertfordshire County Council – Bereavement Resources for Schools

This is a downloadable pdf. It has very comprehensive guidance for schools needing to know what to do in an immediate situation of need and also for schools wishing to plan, should they be called upon to offer support in a variety of situations. It is the sort of document that Head teachers should have on file for use whenever the need arises but it also encourages them to forward plan. See also the resources on Winston’s Wish

ELSA – Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

This site aims to give support to schools and provides a range of useful material and resources for bereavement and loss with various different causes, including divorce as well as death of someone close to a child. The resources are good but are they are for sale. The basis of the site is to give schools support to develop emotional literacy in children. There are training courses for Teaching Assistants on offer, as well.
