What Can a Humanist Wedding Look Like?

Short answer? Anything you like.

There’s no set script, no rigid rules, and no need to follow tradition unless it means something to you. A Humanist wedding gives you the freedom to shape your ceremony in a way that truly reflects who you are as a couple—your personalities, values, and the journey you’ve shared.

That said, most ceremonies do tend to follow a kind of natural rhythm. Here’s an example of a structure that works well (and can be adapted however you wish):

  • Arrival of the couple (together or separately—your choice!)
  • Warm welcome and introductions
  • Reflections on love and commitment
  • A reading, poem, or other personal contribution
  • Your story as a couple—how you met, what you value, your hopes for the future
  • Another contribution (maybe a song, a reading, or something completely unexpected)
  • Words of encouragement or support from your guests
  • Your personal vows or promises
  • A symbolic gesture (like handfasting, candle lighting, or sand blending)
  • Exchange of rings (if you’re doing that)
  • Pronouncement of marriage
  • Final thoughts and well-wishes
  • A joyful exit to music and applause

Ceremonies usually last about 20–30 minutes, and many include a blend of music, readings, symbolic elements, and of course—lots of personality.

But here’s the thing: this is your day. If none of the above fits what you’re after, that’s absolutely fine. We can start from scratch and build something completely bespoke. Your ceremony can be as heartfelt, quirky, serious, fun, simple, or theatrical as you like. The only real limit is your imagination (well, and maybe the laws of physics).

Let’s create something that feels just right for you.
