The legal bit

Most couples say that they feel their Humanist wedding is their real wedding, as what matters is celebrating their happiness and making their commitments in a way they have chosen, in front of the people that mean the most to them.

At present, Humanist weddings and partnerships are not recognised in law outside Scotland, and so most couples will go to a Register Office in the days before their Humanist ceremony in order to deal with the legal formalities.

One of the most positive implications of this is that your ceremony content is extraordinarily flexible. There are no words that you have to say, and no need to limit yourselves when it comes to other considerations too. For example, there is no need to restrict yourselves to licensed venues or to daylight hours. Unlike your legal ceremony, you can have your Humanist ceremony outdoors, in your own home, in a sports stadium, on a roof, at your favourite pub, or even on a boat… or a plane! You can have your ceremony in the middle of the night, under the stars, with fireworks marking your first kiss!

Although we are a UK organisation, many of our celebrants (myself included) do travel abroad for destination weddings and are very happy to do so. Just ask!
