Example Format
When asked what a Humanist Wedding can include, the answer is simple: absolutely anything you want!
Although every ceremony is unique, some features tend to occur more frequently than others, and a ‘typical’ ceremony might be structured as follows:
- Arrival of the couple (individually or together)
- Introductions and welcomes
- Words about love and commitment
- Reading, poem or other personal contribution
- The couple’s story – how they met, shared values, hopes for the future
- Additional personal contribution (e.g. a reading or musical performance)
- Asking guests for encouragement
- The couples promises
- Meaningful symbolic act
- Exchange of rings
- Pronouncement as married
- Words of well-wishing
- Exit
A typical ceremony might last around twenty minutes and include music, readings or poems and perhaps a symbolic act such as handfasting or sand-blending. As a newly married couple you can express your love and publicly pledge your commitment to each other.
Lastly, I want to round-off this page by re-emphasising the point I made at the start, which is that there really is no fixed format. Even if none of the above works for you, but you still want a personalised Humanist wedding, we can tailor the event to the tiniest detail. But this freedom to tailor your ceremony to your exact specification extends much further than the content of the service itself – read more about this freedom on this page. The only limit is your imagination (and the laws of physics, of course).
