About Humanist Ceremonies

Humanists UK (formerly the British Humanist Association, and its predecessors) has been
training non-religious celebrants for more than 125 years. It is the longest established
celebrant training organisation in the UK.

Today, more than 550 Humanist Ceremonies celebrants deliver non-religious funerals,
weddings and naming ceremonies to families and couples throughout England, Wales,
Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. Working as a network with shared values and
standards, they are collaborative and mutually supportive, and can usually find back up
amongst local colleagues if emergency cover is needed.

All Humanist Ceremonies celebrants are trained and accredited by Humanists UK, to the
highest standards, via in-person training programmes delivered by experienced trainers (all
practising celebrants). The course requires several written assessments and observation of
a ceremony before successfully graduating. Our training courses have been awarded the
OCN London mark of quality.

All Humanists UK accredited celebrants have:
● A valid DBS check
Public liability insurance to £5million and professional indemnity insurance to
£250,000.
● Personal website pages on Humanist UK’s website (if they so choose)
Annual accreditation by Humanists UK requires:
● Adherence to the Humanist Ceremonies celebrant network Code of Conduct
● Continuing Professional Development
● Regular peer review
● Quarterly fees to support the charitable aims of Humanists UK in its work to promote
ceremonies and its celebrant network to people who seek non-religious funerals,
weddings or naming ceremonies, and the organisation’s other work to further equality
and humanist rights.

Quality assurance of the work of our accredited celebrants is important to us. Feedback from
clients to Humanists UK is consistently at least 4.5* out of 5*. However, on the rare occasion
where there may have been a problem, there is a transparent and robust complaints process
for both clients and our industry partners (e.g. funeral directors, event managers, wedding
planners).
