Naming Ceremonies

“We found Graham after we decided that we wanted a non religious ceremony for our first child 5yrs ago. Graham gave us all his attention and took us through what is involved in a humanist naming day. The day was a success and everyone said what a lovely ceremony it was. Many hadn’t attended a humanist ceremony before.

After we had a second child, Roisin, in 2022 we straight away thought of Graham. Luckily he was available. Again he came to visit and took loads of information regarding our new baby. The naming day again went as planned and it was a lovely day.

Graham is always professional and full of advice and ideas.”

The arrival of every child brings their own story and meaning to the parents. However conceived, each child has had its own journey to be celebrated – sometimes funny and sometimes sad, it’s all there.

You may want to acknowledge old friends by asking 2, 3 or 4 people to become special friends or guardians to your child. This too becomes an important moment in your ceremony.

Central to the ceremony is the moment of naming and your reasons for the choice of name.

The ceremony can take pace almost anywhere depending on how many guests you want – a house, garden, flat, hall, community centre, pub, wherever suits.

If you are at home, people like to have a symbolic act such as the planting of a tree, and these are the kind of words that might be said around that.
