What to expect

Sam and Egle, July 2019

Your wedding day should be one of the best days of your life.

A Humanist wedding ceremony is unique because it reflects your choices, your story and the people who are most important to you. However, the lack of restrictions on the location and content of Humanist ceremony means that the world is your oyster. You have total control over the venue, readings, music, vows and any other symbolic acts you may wish to include. It can be formal and serious or light hearted and humorous. You can get married up a hill, on the beach or in your own back garden. You can opt for the white dress and coat with tails or wear your favourite jeans and wellies. You can have a sit down, four-course meal or fish and chips followed by ice cream. It really is up to you and I will do everything in my power to help you achieve your dreams.

At our initial meeting, I will take time to get to know you, both as individuals and as a couple and to understand what sort of ceremony you want. This may include aspects of your heritage or cultural identity that you find important. Together, we will create a ceremony that is uniquely ‘you‘. If you are struggling to come up with the right words to say to each other when it comes to vows or personal promises, I can offer you guidelines and examples. I also welcome participation from family and friends.

A non-religious Humanist wedding ceremony or renewal of vows is ideal for any couple looking for a personal ceremony, which is real and authentic. To give you an idea, a typical ceremony may include:

  • Music
  • Welcome and introduction
  • Brief explanation of humanism and the reasons for choosing a humanist ceremony
  • Your story, hopes and ideals
  • Readings – poetry or prose, including contributions by friends and family
  • Live or recorded music
  • Exchange of vows
  • Symbolic gestures, such as the exchange of rings, sand blending, candle lighting etc.
  • Certificate signing
  • A toast

All of the above are optional and I will work together with you to make sure your ceremony is exactly what you want. Please view the following pages to take a look in more detail and see how I work.
